Leeds Football Club has reached a provisional agreement on a £34 million fee with Italian club Sassuolo for the transfer of defender Tarik Muharemovic. The 23-year-old Bosnian-Herzegovina international's potential move to Leeds would mark their second signing of the current transfer window, following the arrival of forward Harry Wilson.
The transfer comes after Leeds sought to bolster their defense. The club previously sold Pascal Struijk to Brighton for £18 million, a move made to comply with financial regulations. Leeds is reportedly still pursuing other transfer targets, including Shea Charles from Southampton, and seeking additions at left back, attacking midfield, and striker.
Muharemovic was involved in a widely discussed incident during the World Cup when he was fouled by United States player Folarin Balogun. Balogun received a red card for the challenge, which occurred during the U.S. team's victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina. The ban for Balogun was later suspended following intervention, allowing him to participate in a subsequent match.
Should the deal be finalized, Sassuolo has indicated they are close to an agreement. Juventus is set to receive 50% of the transfer fee, amounting to approximately £17 million. Bournemouth had previously shown interest in Muharemovic, making an offer in January, and Sunderland had also made inquiries. Leeds is scheduled to begin its pre-season tour in the United States next week.
