A college lecturer has admitted killing a husband and wife in a drink-drive crash that also severely injured a child. Sophie Hynd, 33, pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh to causing the deaths of Jatinder Kaur, 48, and Satwant Singh, 64, by driving dangerously.

The incident occurred on the B981 road in Cluny on December 19, 2025, after Hynd had spent the day drinking with colleagues and later went out to see her boyfriend. She was driving her Nissan Qashqai when she collided head-on with a Volkswagen Polo carrying the Kaur family.

Hynd admitted to being impaired by alcohol and driving erratically, swerving and entering the opposing carriageway. The court heard that minutes before the fatal crash, another motorist had called emergency services after Hynd was seen tailgating and swerving into oncoming traffic.

Prosecutor Lynsey Rodger stated that Jatinder Kaur was driving at approximately 31 mph when Hynd crossed double solid white lines and entered her lane. Parveet Kaur, 19, a passenger in the Polo, alerted her mother to the oncoming vehicle before the collision.

Jatinder Kaur was pronounced dead at the scene. Satwant Singh was taken to hospital, where he died on December 21. A ten-year-old boy in the car sustained internal injuries and a broken leg, while Parveet Kaur suffered minor injuries.

Hynd wept as Judge Michael O’Grady, KC, described the crime as 'very grave' and remanded her in custody. Her legal representative indicated that mitigation would be presented at sentencing next month. Judge O’Grady told Hynd, 'The charge you have pled guilty to is very grave indeed. You have left in your wake a dead husband and wife.'

The couple's three surviving children released a statement expressing their grief: 'We could never have prepared for losing our parents in this way. We miss them more than words can express.'
