Charles Leclerc claimed his first victory at Silverstone, winning a dramatic British Grand Prix that concluded behind a safety car following a late crash involving Max Verstappen. The race was also marked by significant struggles for Kimi Antonelli, who had been running in second place.
Antonelli's promising position unraveled in the closing laps when he ran over a kerb, seemingly damaging his Mercedes. "Something is broken in the car," he reported, leading to a pit stop for a new front wing and further issues thought to be related to suspension or a wheel shield. He incurred a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits during his difficulties. This misfortune allowed Lewis Hamilton and George Russell to gain positions.
Further complicating the race, Max Verstappen lost control of his car at Stowe corner, resulting in a crash and the deployment of the safety car. Hamilton pitted, moving Russell up to second place. Despite expectations of a final lap of racing, the safety car remained out, leading to a premature end and boos from the record crowd.
Russell ultimately finished second, significantly closing the points gap in the championship. Hamilton secured third place, though he faces a post-race investigation for a potential yellow flag infringement. Lando Norris finished fourth for McLaren.
Antonelli, after his penalty was applied, finished 16th, marking a disappointing outcome after holding second place for much of the race. He has now failed to score in two of the last three races, diminishing his once substantial championship lead.
Leclerc's win was his first since the 2024 American Grand Prix. He capitalized on a wheel-spinning start from Antonelli and overcame an early five-second penalty for a jump start himself, a penalty that might have seen him finish lower had he not been so dominant in other aspects of the race. Earlier in the race, Verstappen, Russell, and Hamilton had engaged in a close battle. Russell had briefly held third place before a slow puncture necessitated a pit stop.
The dramatic conclusion at Silverstone provided a mixed bag of results for the British drivers, with Russell and Hamilton benefiting from the late-race incidents, while the race's overall pace was described as somewhat dull for the first two-thirds.
