LeBron James Stands Still During Anthem After Trump Criticism
After viral video of pregame warmup and subsequent criticism from former President Donald Trump, the NBA star remained motionless during "The Star-Spangled Banner."
LeBron James stood motionless and straight-faced during the national anthem before Thursday's game between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Cleveland Cavaliers, a notable change from his actions two nights prior. Videos circulating on social media captured James engaged in arm swings and shooting motions during "The Star-Spangled Banner" prior to the 76ers' season opener against the New York Knicks.
Former President Donald Trump publicly denounced James's actions, calling him a "TOTAL DISGRACE" in a post on his Truth Social platform. Trump asserted that James should apologize to American soldiers and heroes for disrespecting the flag and the country. James, 41, has not yet issued a public statement regarding Trump's comments or his own pregame routine.
The incident occurs amid renewed attention on athletes' pregame conduct during the national anthem. Players on the WNBA's Dream and Valkyries have also drawn criticism for leaving the court before the anthem during the Finals. Vice President JD Vance commented on the WNBA situation, stating that public policy criticisms should not involve disrespecting the nation.
Representatives for both WNBA teams have indicated that their players' pregame routines, including leaving the court before the anthem, have been consistent throughout the season and carried over from the previous year. Valkyries guard Veronica Burton stated that the practice is part of their established pregame ritual.
