LeBron James Revels in Spoiling Knicks' Ring Night with 76ers Victory
James scores 14 points, seven assists, and nine rebounds in Philadelphia's season-opening win over New York.
LeBron James expressed satisfaction with the Philadelphia 76ers' 106-100 victory over the New York Knicks on opening night, a game that followed the Knicks' championship celebration for their first NBA title in 53 years. James, acquired by the 76ers in a recent two-year, $8 million contract, stated it was "pretty special" to win on the Knicks' banner-raising night.
James contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists in 34 minutes during the game at Madison Square Garden. The veteran forward also engaged in a verbal exchange with a courtside fan during the second quarter. According to reports from the NBC broadcast, the fan commented on James's helicopter and suggested that living in New York did not entitle him to fan support. Video of the incident showed James responding to the fan. Actor Spike Lee was observed intervening to de-escalate the situation.
This win marked James's first with the 76ers. He had previously shared in an interview with ESPN that he had envisioned finishing his career in New York and playing at Madison Square Garden, calling it one of the best arenas in the world. However, he stated that after the Knicks' playoff victory against San Antonio, he realized he could not join the team.
