LeBron James was reportedly prepared to announce his free agency decision last week, but NBA Commissioner Adam Silver's public statements on the delay have caused irritation and prompted a change in timing, according to Cleveland radio host Andy Baskin.

Baskin, speaking on 92.3 The Fan's Baskin and Phelps show, cited a source who indicated that James's team was close to making an announcement, particularly while in New York, a city under global observation due to the World Cup.

"Here’s what I was told yesterday about the whole LeBron situation," Baskin stated. "Last week, LeBron’s crew was probably ready to make an announcement, especially because they were in New York. The world had their eyes on New York because of the World Cup as well. They were probably comfortable making an announcement as early as last week."

However, Baskin's source suggested that external pressure, specifically from Silver, led to a shift. "And then, people were telling them what to do. There’s a little bit of irritation… Irritated was the word I was told, by the commissioner pushing them…so they decided to hold back."

The NBA offseason has been dominated by the ongoing saga of James, who informed the Los Angeles Lakers in June that he would not return for the upcoming season. This move made the 41-year-old the summer's most sought-after free agent, with his ultimate destination remaining unknown.

Despite the uncertainty, speculation has been rampant, with only James's inner circle appearing to possess the definitive answer to the league's most significant offseason question heading into the 2026-27 season. The apparent final contenders for the NBA's all-time leading scorer are the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Golden State Warriors.
