LeBron James Explains Departure from Lakers for 76ers: 'I Don't Want That'

LeBron James has articulated his primary motivation for leaving the Los Angeles Lakers to join the Philadelphia 76ers: the pursuit of another NBA championship. James, speaking at the 76ers' media day, stated his discomfort with the prospect of his career ending after a second-round playoff exit.
"In order for us to be great, we have to do things that are just not comfortable. We have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. That is the best way to expedite being great," James said. "If we can do that, then we can be a great team. If we don’t do that, then we’ll be like oh man it was a great team on paper and we had a lot of great talent. And we lost in the second round. I don’t wanna do that."
He added, "I didn’t leave my family to lose in the second round." This candid admission followed his decision earlier in the offseason not to return to the Lakers for the 2026-27 season. As the top free agent, James reportedly narrowed his choices to five teams, with his agent Rich Paul indicating that James was seeking "complete basketball happiness" in the later stages of his career. His subsequent signing of a two-year, $8 million deal with Philadelphia suggested that financial terms were not the primary consideration.
