LeBron James Dismisses Trump's Anthem Criticism
NBA star calls former president's remarks 'a slow news day' amid ongoing national anthem debate in sports.
LeBron James has responded to criticism from former President Donald Trump regarding his national anthem routine, characterizing the remarks as stemming from a "slow news day."
During the Philadelphia 76ers' season opener on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, James engaged in his typical pregame warm-up, which included miming a golf shot during the performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner." This action drew a sharp rebuke from Trump, who posted on Truth Social that James should apologize to American service members and heroes.
"While listening to our National Anthem, LeBron James disrespects our Country," Trump wrote. "LeBron James should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag, and all that our Country stands for!"
Ahead of the 76ers' home opener on Thursday, James appeared more subdued during the anthem. However, his response to Trump's criticism indicated he was unbothered by the former president's comments.
"I think that goes right in with other outside noise we’ve already had," 76ers coach Nick Nurse said when asked about the situation. "I keep saying the same thing. All I really care about is getting to the practice floor, getting them in the film room, getting them to the game floor. The focus that they’ve had and the intent and all the stuff like that has been outstanding."
This exchange is the latest in a history of public disagreements between James and Trump. In 2017, James referred to Trump as a "bum" on social media.
The controversy also arises as the national anthem has become a focal point in sports discussions. Recently, WNBA teams the Las Vegas Aces and the Chicago Sky drew attention for leaving the court before the anthem during their championship series. Both teams stated that these actions were part of their established pregame routines that predated the series.
