LeBron James Alters National Anthem Routine Amidst Trump Criticism

NBA icon LeBron James adopted a more subdued posture during the national anthem on Thursday, a change that followed sharp criticism from former President Donald Trump. Trump had accused James of disrespecting the United States after video emerged showing the basketball player practicing his free throw technique and pretending to swing a golf club during "The Star-Spangled Banner" prior to a game earlier in the week.

Trump took to his Truth Social platform to label James an "absolute disgrace" for his actions. "LeBron James should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag, and all that our Country stands for!" Trump wrote. He reiterated his criticism during a rally in Iowa on Thursday night, questioning James's anthem behavior.

Hours after Trump's public remarks, James was observed standing with his arms behind his back while swaying during the anthem before the Philadelphia 76ers' game. This marked a noticeable shift from his previous pregame routine.

Following the game, in which James helped the 76ers secure a comeback victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers, he appeared to address the controversy. "It must be a slow news day at the office, you know," James told reporters when asked about Trump's comments.

The exchange is the latest in a series of public disagreements between James and Trump, which have spanned several years. The tension dates back to at least 2017 when James referred to Trump as a "bum." Earlier in 2026, Trump had questioned James's status as a great basketball player and suggested the athlete might be a "racist" who "doesn't like Trump."

James, a prominent figure off the court, has frequently used his platform to voice his political opinions, including endorsing Democratic candidates and leading voting-rights initiatives.
