Leaked emergency dispatch audio indicates that first responders were called to former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell's Washington, D.C., home for an unconscious person on the day he was hospitalized.
The audio, reported by The New York Post, suggests the incident may have involved a cardiac emergency. McConnell, 84, was admitted to the hospital on June 14 and has remained there for nearly three weeks. His office has provided limited details, stating only that he is "continuing to improve" and remains engaged with Senate business and matters concerning Kentucky.
Despite his hospitalization, aides report that McConnell has continued to communicate with colleagues and work remotely while the Senate is in recess. He stepped down as Senate Republican leader in early 2025 and announced last year that he would not seek reelection in 2026.
This health incident follows a series of public medical events in recent years, including multiple falls, a concussion, and episodes where he appeared to freeze while speaking at public events. In February, McConnell was hospitalized for approximately one week with flu-like symptoms.
McConnell's office has stated that the senator "continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff." The DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department has declined to confirm details of the dispatch recording, citing HIPAA restrictions and uncertainty about the audio's origin, which may suggest its authenticity.
If McConnell were to resign, Kentucky's governor would appoint a temporary replacement, followed by a special election.
