Leah Williamson's Penalty Blunder Leads Arsenal's Draw Against Paris FC

Arsenal captain Leah Williamson conceded a bizarre penalty, contributing to her team's collapse and a draw against Paris FC in the Women's Champions League. The Gunners had established a two-goal advantage before the late-match drama.

Alessia Russo broke her goalscoring drought in the 41st minute with a precise finish. This was followed by Georgia Stanway's first goal for the club in the 50th minute, her debut season after transferring from Bayern Munich.

Paris FC managed to pull one back with a well-executed counter-attack goal approximately 20 minutes later. The equalizer came in the 87th minute from a penalty awarded after a miscommunication between Williamson and Arsenal goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez.

According to the incident replays, Williamson appeared to believe Rodriguez had thrown her the ball. Williamson then handled the ball to place it for a goal kick, but the referee ruled it a penalty because Rodriguez had actually kicked the ball to Williamson, and play was considered live. The Laws of the Game, as defined by IFAB, state that a goal kick is in play once the ball is stationary and kicked by a defending player. Replays indicated the ball had stopped after Rodriguez threw it onto the pitch and before she kicked it to Williamson, validating the referee's decision.

Williamson was visibly distressed by the outcome. Maeline Mendy successfully converted the penalty to secure the draw for Paris FC.

Following the match, Arsenal's manager, Renee Slegers, drew criticism for not attending the post-match press conference, with assistant coach Aaron D'Antino addressing the media instead. D'Antino expressed that the team did not believe it was a penalty, stating their perception was that the goal kick had not yet been taken. He added that from his recollection, the ball was still moving when it was passed to Williamson for her to take the goal kicks as usual.

Slegers faces mounting pressure ahead of Arsenal's upcoming match against champions Manchester City. Arsenal has secured only one win in their initial four Women's Super League (WSL) games and had a narrow 1-0 victory in their Champions League opener against HB Koge.

With significant summer signings, including midfielder Stanway and World Cup winner Ona Batlle, Arsenal was anticipated to be a strong contender for the league title.
