LAX Ranked Most Reliable Major Airport, Despite Homelessness Issues

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has been ranked as the most reliable major airport in the United States, according to a new report from ConsumerAffairs. The study placed LAX ahead of other major hubs like Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The ranking was determined by analyzing data on cancellation rates, flight delays, and diversions, drawing information from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation. Airports with exceptionally low rates of cancellations and prolonged delays generally topped the list.

While LAX leads in operational reliability, the airport has also faced persistent challenges with homelessness. Makeshift encampments and individuals sleeping within terminals have drawn public attention and highlighted the city's ongoing struggles with the issue. During events such as the FIFA World Cup matches hosted in Los Angeles, arriving visitors were reportedly exposed to visible signs of homelessness at the airport.

Reports from previous years indicated a significant number of homeless individuals seeking shelter within LAX terminals. Police records from 2019, for instance, showed officers responding to over 1,000 incidents at the airport, many involving homeless individuals. Allegations of serious offenses, including threats, assault, theft, and carjacking, have been documented. The airport's official policy states that entry is restricted to airline passengers and personnel, with the facility closed to the general public 24/7.

In contrast to LAX's top ranking for reliability, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) was identified as the least reliable major airport. It was followed by Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport. DCA reported the highest cancellation rate among large airports, at 2.8%, and frequently canceled its final daily flight.

Other airports that appeared in the bottom ten for reliability include Miami International, Philadelphia International, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, LaGuardia, Tampa International, Washington Dulles, and George Bush Intercontinental. Smaller airports also featured in the rankings, with President Donald J. Trump International in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Asheville Regional Airport in North Carolina listed at the bottom of their respective categories.
