A solicitor has been secretly filmed by the BBC allegedly explaining how he could make a £45,000 fine for employing illegal workers disappear. Mohammad Alias Yousaf, also known as Alias, reportedly made the claim to an undercover reporter who was posing as a mini-mart owner facing such a penalty.
According to the BBC report, Yousaf suggested that the fine could be circumvented if the reporter could find someone overseas who would declare themselves the owner of the mini-mart. Yousaf has denied ever providing such advice or giving false information to the Home Office.
In response to the BBC's investigation, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced a review of the procedures for issuing and collecting fines related to illegal working.
