The Great American State Fair concluded this week, having hosted a presidential visit and navigated production issues alongside weather-related closures. As this particular fair wraps up, others across the nation are commencing their seasonal runs, including the politically significant Iowa State Fair in mid-August.
Several Republican lawmakers recently shared their favorite state fair foods in a poll. Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado favored "hot dogs, death dogs loaded with everything." Derrick Van Orden, representing Wisconsin, chose cheese curds, while John Rose of Tennessee opted for funnel cakes. Tim Moore of North Carolina backed the ham biscuit.
Other lawmakers highlighted different choices. Gabe Evans of Colorado and Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee both selected turkey legs, with Evans also noting sweet corn. James Gallagher, a recent House GOP addition from California, and Julie Fedorchak of North Dakota both endorsed corn dogs. Fedorchak also mentioned cotton candy as a secondary preference.
Erin Houchin of Indiana named elephant ears as her top pick, with cotton candy as her second choice.
