Lawmakers from both parties gathered in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday morning to pay tribute to the late Senator Lindsey Graham, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this month at the age of 71. Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, lay in honor for a ceremonial viewing.
Vice President JD Vance shared personal anecdotes, recounting how Graham had significantly aided his own Senate campaign by helping to raise over $100,000 during a brief television appearance. Vance described Graham as someone who "loved people" and was consequently willing to "reason with them, to respect them, and ultimately to persuade them."
Senate Majority Leader John Thune also delivered remarks, expressing a sense of personal loss. "It's hard to think that there will be no more Senate dinners with Lindsey, that he won't be dropping by my office to discuss some piece of legislation, or make laugh with his witty commentary," Thune said. He concluded his remarks by referencing his faith and the hope of resurrection.
Among those present were members of President Donald Trump's Cabinet, including EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, and Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. Democrats from the Senate Judiciary Committee, which Graham formerly chaired, were also seen.
Senator Darline Graham, Lindsey Graham's sister, was appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to fill her late brother's seat until the current term expires in January. She was observed to be visibly emotional during the ceremony, dabbing tears with a handkerchief and comforting her daughter. Darline Graham has since filed to run for the full term of her brother's seat, with a special primary election scheduled for August 11th.
Senator Graham's death was announced on July 12th. His office released a statement that evening citing "aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease" as the cause of death. The death certificate was pending final toxicological and microscopic testing. A 911 call reporting "cardiac arrest" had been placed from Graham's residence on the evening of July 11th.
