Lawler, Conley Spar Over Immigration, Crime in Heated New York Debate

Tensions flared during a debate Wednesday night between Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., and Democrat challenger Cait Conley, as the two candidates vying to represent New York's 17th Congressional District clashed over immigration, crime, and sanctuary policies. The race is considered a key battleground that could influence control of the House of Representatives.

One of the most contentious exchanges occurred when Lawler criticized moderator Dan Mannarino for focusing on the recent shooting of an undocumented immigrant by ICE agents in the Bronx. Lawler argued that the individual had a criminal record and that New York's sanctuary policies and recent bail reforms, which he accused Conley of supporting, created the situation. When the moderator pressed him on how to ensure ICE agents adhere to guidelines, Lawler retorted, "You guys want to focus on a gangbanger who has put people in harm's way? I want to make sure that our communities are safe."

Lawler also brought up the case of Sheridan Gorman, a student from his district who was killed in Chicago. The suspect in Gorman's death is an undocumented immigrant who had prior arrests that did not result in his transfer to ICE due to Chicago's sanctuary policies. Conley called Gorman's death an "atrocious crime" and stated the individual should have been deported, but Lawler countered that the suspect would have been deported if not for sanctuary laws and cashless bail policies he claims Conley supports.

The debate also saw an exchange regarding sexual assault and consent. Conley accused Lawler of being allied with Rep. Max Miller, R-Ohio, who has faced domestic violence allegations. Lawler, in turn, criticized Conley for accepting campaign donations from former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who was linked to a prostitution ring. Conley responded sharply, telling Lawler, "I do not need you to mansplain to me, domestic abuse and sexual assault against women."

Lawler is seeking a third term in the Empire State's 17th Congressional District, one of the few remaining swing seats in the House.
