Lawler Championed Over Conley in NY-17 Race

Rep. Mike Lawler, the incumbent for New York's 17th Congressional District, is presented as a more effective representative than his challenger, Cait Conley, according to an analysis by the New York Post. Lawler is described as a centrist with deep ties to the district, consistently ranked as one of Congress's most bipartisan members. His supporters point to his success in securing a tax break for New Yorkers by increasing the SALT deduction ceiling, an achievement that required cooperation with his own party and then-President Donald Trump.

Conley is characterized as an operative with radical views, funded by out-of-state interests and backed by the Democratic machine. The analysis suggests her campaign is out of step with Hudson Valley values.

Lawler's affiliation with the Problem Solvers Caucus is highlighted as evidence of his commitment to bipartisan work. Rep. Jared Golden, a retiring Democrat from Maine, has endorsed Lawler, calling him a "true partner." Lawler's policy positions include advocating for federal permitting reform, opposing top-down energy mandates, and supporting the restart of the Indian Point nuclear power plant to ensure reliable energy for the region. He has also been critical of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s moratorium on data centers, arguing for local decision-making on economic development.

On immigration and public safety, Lawler advocates for cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE to remove criminal migrants. However, he also supports a balanced approach, including the bipartisan Dignity Act to provide a pathway to legal status for the undocumented and a gradual end to Temporary Protected Status for Haitians who have contributed to their communities. The parents of Sheridan Gorman, who was killed by an undocumented immigrant, have endorsed Lawler.

In contrast, Conley is depicted as adhering to the far-left party line, with criticisms including her alleged support for sanctuary policies and her initial reluctance to denounce antisemitic remarks made by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The analysis suggests Conley's campaign focuses heavily on criticizing Trump, despite Lawler's record of working across the aisle. Conley is ultimately portrayed as a politically aligned candidate, while Lawler is presented as an independent representative for his constituents.
