LAUSD Board Criticized for Cutting School Police Funding Amid Safety Concerns
Critics argue that the reduction in the Los Angeles School Police Department's budget in 2020, influenced by union demands and activist pressure, has compromised student safety and contributed to rising bullying incidents.
The Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) faced a significant budget cut in 2020, a decision criticized by some who believe it has compromised student safety. Four members of the LAUSD school board — Monica Garcia, Jackie Goldberg, Nick Melvoin, and Kelly Gonez — voted to reduce the LASPD budget by $25 million, which represented 28% of its total funding and led to the elimination of 133 positions. Three board members opposed the measure.
The decision followed demands from activists, including Black Lives Matter, and the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) union, which advocated for defunding the police in schools. The UTLA argued that LASPD officers made students, particularly those from minority backgrounds, feel unsafe, and that resources would be better allocated to counselors, nurses, and librarians.
However, critics contend that the presence of law enforcement is crucial for deterring crime and bullying, and that the reduction in police presence has exacerbated safety issues. Parents in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) are now reportedly demanding a more robust LASPD presence as instances of bullying become more prevalent.
The LAUSD board's decision to cut the police budget has been linked to broader financial challenges within the district. Earlier in the year, the board approved significant salary increases for staff, despite warnings of potential insolvency from LA County. The district is now facing financial strain as it attempts to reallocate funds.
Restoring full funding to the LASPD is seen by proponents as essential for ensuring a safe learning environment for students. The department plays a role in protecting students from gangs, criminals, and bullies, as well as safeguarding teachers.
