Former actress Laurette Spang-McCook, 75, was recently seen on a rare public outing in Los Angeles with her husband, actor John McCook, and their son. Spang-McCook is widely recognized for her role as Cassiopeia on the cult classic science fiction series Battlestar Galactica in the late 1970s.
Spang-McCook, who retired from acting in 2007 after a final project in 2007, has largely stayed out of the public eye. She was pictured wearing a black sweater and flared jeans, while her husband sported an unbuttoned white shirt and dark trousers. Their son accompanied them on the outing.
Spang-McCook's career began after she was discovered by a Universal Studios talent agent in 1972. She signed a seven-year contract, leading to guest roles on popular shows such as Charlie's Angels, Happy Days, The Six Million Dollar Man, and The Love Boat. Her most significant role came as Cassiopeia in Battlestar Galactica, a character initially conceived as a "socialator" but later rewritten as a medical worker and companion to Starbuck.
Battlestar Galactica, despite its initial success, was canceled in 1979 after one season due to high production costs and a shift in network programming. A subsequent, lower-budget series, Galactica 1980, did not feature Spang-McCook and lasted only 10 episodes.
Following her Battlestar Galactica role, Spang-McCook continued to appear in guest spots on shows like Three's Company and Magnum, P.I., before largely retiring from acting in 1984, with a brief return for the 2007 horror film Plot 7. She married John McCook in 1980.
John McCook is well-known to television audiences for his long-running role as Eric Forrester on the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, a part he has held since 1987. He also had a previous role on The Young and the Restless from 1975 to 1980. The couple has three children, including actress Molly Cook.
Laurette Spang-McCook was born in Buffalo, New York, and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before pursuing her acting career.
