BBC broadcaster Lauren Laverne has announced a new health diagnosis: a rare blood and bone marrow disorder called smouldering myeloma. Laverne, who presents Radio 4's Desert Island Discs and the BBC Radio 6 Music Breakfast Show, revealed the news on Instagram on Friday, less than two years after receiving an all-clear from a previous cancer diagnosis.
Laverne, 48, explained that smouldering myeloma is an asymptomatic condition that, in some cases, can develop into blood cancer. She stated that for her, the risk of this progression is low, and she is currently feeling well and does not require treatment. She noted that individuals like cancer survivors, who undergo regular monitoring, are more likely to be diagnosed early with such conditions.
She emphasized that this new diagnosis is unrelated to her previous illness or recent surgery. Laverne described smouldering myeloma as a chronic condition without a cure, which affects her immune system and requires her to take good care of herself. She will undergo regular monitoring through blood tests, MRIs, and bone marrow biopsies.
Laverne, who has previously spoken about health anxiety stemming from the loss of her mother to cancer in 2022, said that sharing her experience is part of what she learned from her health challenges. She expressed gratitude for the support from her family, friends, the BBC Radio 6 Music team, her doctors, consultants, nurses, therapist, and her general practitioner.
She particularly highlighted the role of her GP, who insisted on investigating her persistently low iron levels, leading to the early detection of this second significant health issue. Laverne advised others to advocate for themselves and seek specialist consultation if they experience similar symptoms.
Laverne plans to take a short holiday and return to work afterward. She indicated a potential desire to share more about her experiences in the future.
Her announcement was met with supportive messages from celebrity friends, including Kate Garraway and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who offered well wishes and acknowledged the courage in her public sharing.
