Las Vegas Authorities Identify Victim Found in Lake Mead Barrel

Las Vegas investigators have identified the remains of a suspected murder victim whose body was discovered in a barrel at Lake Mead four years ago. Authorities are expected to make a public announcement regarding the identification on Tuesday.

The barrel containing the victim's remains was first discovered by a group of boaters at Lake Mead's Hemenway Harbor on May 1, 2022. Investigators at the time noted a gunshot wound on the body, leading them to suspect foul play. Based on the victim's clothing, authorities estimated the time of death to be between the mid-1970s and mid-1980s.

Receding water levels in Lake Mead, a consequence of the ongoing drought in the western United States, have been credited with the discovery of the barrel and other human remains in the lake. These discoveries have included those of suspected drowning victims and missing persons.

Experts familiar with the case have suggested the victim may have been killed in a mob-style hit, characteristic of crimes from that era. The victim's body was found with two gunshot wounds to the head, a method often associated with organized crime executions.

Authorities had scheduled a news briefing for Tuesday afternoon to release further details about the case.
