Larry David asserted his creative authority on his new HBO sketch show, “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness,” by telling former President Barack Obama that he was the "president of this" during a disagreement over script notes. The exchange occurred during the filming of the series, which Obama co-executive produced and also stars in.

Director Jeff Schaffer recounted the incident in an interview with Variety, explaining that after Obama offered some suggestions, David responded dismissively. Obama reportedly remarked that he had spent considerable time discussing the humor of the show and was surprised by David's defensive reaction to a single note. Obama then drew a parallel to his time in the Oval Office, stating, "When I was in the Oval Office, I took advice and listened to my advisors, and I was the president of the United States." David's retort was, "Yeah, but I’m the president of this."

Despite the humorous tension, Schaffer noted that Obama's input was "invaluable" and that the former president was enthusiastic about the material. He added that David and Obama share a strong rapport, evident in their frequent golfing and interactions.

David, known for his curmudgeonly persona, has previously expressed embarrassment about American actions, notably referring to UFC fights held on the White House lawn as a "travesty" and "embarrassing."
