Major League Soccer has named LAFC co-owner Larry Berg as its next commissioner, the league announced Monday. Berg will succeed Don Garber, who has led the league as commissioner since 1999 and whose contract is set to expire in 2027.
MLS owners voted on the selection of their next commissioner in New York on Monday. Berg was one of two finalists for the role, alongside former Fox executive David Nathanson. Berg joined LAFC as a limited partner in 2014 and rose to become the franchise's lead managing owner.
Berg's ownership stake in LAFC, a franchise valued at over $1 billion and recognized as one of the league's most successful, is expected to be divested due to a conflict of interest with his new role as commissioner. Berg has a significant background in finance, having served as a senior partner at Apollo Global Management for 30 years before joining investment firm 26North as a partner in 2023. While his career has largely been in the business world, his involvement with LAFC has provided him with experience in sports ownership.
