Larissa Waters Resigns as Greens Party Leader Amid Health Battle
Australian Greens Leader Larissa Waters announced her resignation due to kidney disease, stepping down to focus on her health while remaining a Queensland senator.
Larissa Waters, the federal leader of the Australian Greens, announced Monday evening that she will step down from her leadership role due to a battle with kidney disease. Waters stated that while her prognosis is positive, her recovery requires a pace incompatible with leading a political party.
"My prognosis is good, but doctors are clear that recovery needs a slower pace than leading a party allows," Waters said in a statement shared on X. "It's a difficult decision to step back, but for the good of our movement I need to let someone else lead the Greens to success at the next election."
Waters has led the Greens for just over a year, having taken over from former leader Adam Bandt after his defeat in the Melbourne seat at the May 2025 federal election. She confirmed that she will continue to serve as a Queensland senator for the party.
"I'm so proud of what we've achieved together, and I'll be back as soon as I can be as one of your two Senators for Queensland," she added.
Daily Mail understands that David Shoebridge is considered a likely frontrunner to succeed Waters as party leader.
