Los Angeles police launched a significant operation targeting street racing events in South Los Angeles early Saturday, reportedly detaining over 300 participants and spectators and preparing to tow approximately 100 vehicles.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) issued a tactical alert at 3:21 a.m. for the operation, which continued for several hours. The crackdown occurred at the intersection of South Figueroa Street and West Alondra Boulevard. By 9 a.m., officers were still present at the scene.
According to reports from the scene, the operation was a joint effort involving the California Highway Patrol, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the LAPD. Video from the intersection showed numerous officers surrounding a large crowd gathered among many vehicles. Tow trucks were on standby.
Reports indicated that some attendees were cited for participating in the illegal gathering. Prison buses were observed at the location, reportedly to transport arrested individuals. LAPD officials stated that investigators were collecting phone numbers from those present.
Illegal street takeovers, characterized by drivers performing stunts like donuts in intersections as crowds watch, have presented ongoing challenges for law enforcement in Los Angeles. The scale of Saturday's operation, if confirmed by the reported numbers, would represent a substantial crackdown on these events.
