Lanterns Season Finale Reveals Shocking Killer and Unforeseen Plot Twists

The season finale of HBO's "Lanterns" has revealed the identity of Hal Jordan's killer and the complex circumstances surrounding his death, concluding the show's inaugural season with several surprising revelations.

Sheriff Kerry is revealed to be the one who shot Hal Jordan. Her motive stemmed from Hal's discovery that her son, Noah, is secretly a Manhunter. The narrative explains that Kerry became pregnant with Noah via Manhunter technology, implanted or conceived by Zoe, Noah's "grandmother." Kerry subsequently raised Noah, who appears and ages like a human.

John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre, anchors the series with his performance as a morally conflicted detective. Kelly Macdonald, as Kerry, delivers an empathetic portrayal when explaining her actions to Stewart, stating she killed Hal impulsively to protect her son's normal life.

Kyle Chandler plays two versions of Hal Jordan: the present-day Hal and a digital backup from two decades prior. The original Hal dies attempting to save Noah and Kerry, while his backup perishes after tricking Stewart into confessing his affection.

Shea Pritchard's performance as Noah highlights the character's struggle against his inherent Manhunter programming. The series draws parallels between Noah's choice between a normal life and succumbing to his destructive nature and societal issues faced by young men, with a commentary alluding to the potential for such power to influence politics.

Ultimately, Stewart chooses not to kill Noah, instead trusting that Noah's capacity for questioning his programming will allow him to overcome it. Stewart then confronts Kerry, extracts her confession about Hal's death, and leaves her and Noah to their lives.

Before returning home, Stewart encounters Guy Gardner and informs him of his independent status as a new Lantern in Sector 2814. This development follows Stewart and an alternate Hal Jordan torturing Sinestro to uncover Noah's plan. Noah had freed Sinestro from space prison to create a new Lantern, intending to acquire a ring and complete a set. Sinestro had used similar weapons to kill a Guardian, indicating their potential threat.

Stewart retrieves both Hal Jordan's ring and Sinestro's fear-infused Lantern. He then creates a new oath for charging his ring, diverging from traditional Green Lantern vows. The oath reflects a personal embrace of fear and a choice to serve "this Lantern's light," suggesting a departure from established Green Lantern ideology and hinting at the potential influence of yellow, fear-based power.

The season finale concludes with Stewart's embrace of his new path, leaving the future of his character and the implications of his yellow-tinged Lantern power open for speculation. Despite narrative criticisms, the performances are highlighted as a strong point for the series, with the potential for Pritchard to carry the show in future seasons.
