Lane Kiffin Criticizes SEC Schedule, Falsifies Series History

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has recently drawn attention for his public comments regarding the Southeastern Conference's nine-game football schedule, particularly as his team prepares to face Texas A&M. Kiffin's remarks, made during a conference teleconference, touched upon the challenges of playing teams with dual-threat quarterbacks and alluded to what he described as "scheduling quirks."

Kiffin specifically mentioned the difficulty his team faced against Ole Miss's quarterback, Trinidad Chambliss, following their loss to the Rebels. He then commented on the upcoming game against Texas A&M's Marcel Reed. "Obviously we just played the best one in the country last week thinking he can hurt you even when you have the right call on and everybody covered and a guy comes free," Kiffin stated, referencing Chambliss. "Obviously he (Chambliss) played great a year ago here in the stadium, so this is one of those scheduling quirks just like last week where never in that LSU-Ole Miss series had it ever been played two times in a row."

However, Kiffin's assertion that the LSU-Ole Miss rivalry game had never been played in the same venue in consecutive seasons has been shown to be false. Historical records indicate that LSU hosted the game in consecutive years in 2001 and 2002. Furthermore, Baton Rouge was the site of the rivalry for four consecutive seasons from 1961 to 1964. The recent scheduling, with Ole Miss hosting in both 2025 and 2026, marks the first time the rivalry has been played in Oxford in back-to-back years. Kiffin coached Ole Miss to a victory over LSU in 2025 before taking the LSU head coaching position in November of that year.

Kiffin's complaints come in the same week that LSU is scheduled to host Texas A&M for the second consecutive season, rather than playing the game at Texas A&M's home stadium. He sarcastically referred to these situations as "scheduling quirks that come with our awesome move to nine games that has sure looked so great here lately."

The SEC expanded to a nine-game conference schedule this season. Kiffin's pointed remarks just one conference game into the new format have been noted as particularly bold, especially given his recent move to LSU.
