LSU head coach Lane Kiffin addressed the complexities surrounding the Southeastern Conference's lawsuit against LSU and his decisions regarding the team's roster during an appearance on ESPN's "College GameDay." Kiffin explained his choice to keep former NFL players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris off the roster for an upcoming game, citing the need to consider the "big picture" for the LSU football program amidst legal uncertainties.
"That wasn't easy," Kiffin stated on "College GameDay." "As much as I feel for the players, and I believe that you fight for what you believe in and I believe these kids have an opportunity to play — just like all the other kids around the country that are winning court cases and being put on rosters."
He elaborated on the delicate balance he faced as head coach. "But at the same time, I’m the head coach of LSU, and I had to make a decision that is for the big picture of LSU and the LSU football program with the uncertainties of what potentially could’ve come by adding them to the roster. And we didn’t get exact reasons or exact what that would mean if we added them."
Wright, a tight end who spent the summer with the Cleveland Browns, and Harris, a defensive tackle waived by the New Orleans Saints in August, are among athletes pursuing a fifth year of eligibility after previously entering the NFL. A Louisiana court had granted an injunction allowing them to play, but the SEC filed a federal lawsuit against LSU and Kiffin on Thursday, alleging violations of league rules.
Kiffin also spoke about the guidance he received from ESPN personality Pat McAfee during the week. "Between you and I, we’re about the two most-hated people there are," Kiffin remarked to McAfee. "Told me, ‘Hey, just focus on it. Don’t worry about the noise.’ Lot of times, to do great things, you’re gonna be hated."
This appearance comes as Kiffin prepares for his highly anticipated debut at LSU, following his mid-season departure from Ole Miss during the 2025 season, which required the Rebels to proceed without him during their College Football Playoff run. ESPN reported that Wright and Harris could potentially be added to LSU's roster later in the season.
