Southern California residents seeking to escape the summer heat have a variety of lake destinations within driving distance of Los Angeles. These natural and man-made bodies of water provide alternatives to traditional ocean visits and pool parties.

Castaic Lake, located in Castaic, is the largest lake in Los Angeles County and is approximately a half-hour drive from the city. While the main upper lake is currently closed to swimming due to a harmful algae bloom, activities such as boating and sailing remain permitted. The lower lake, however, offers swimming opportunities, including the Cali Splash Park, which features inflatable obstacle courses.

For those interested in water sports like wakeboarding and water skiing, Los Angeles Wake, which typically operates on Castaic Lake, has relocated its services to nearby Pyramid Lake and Lake Elsinore. Private wake surfing experiences are available for groups of two to five people, including instruction.

Further afield, about a two-hour drive from Los Angeles, are Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake. These locations offer rentals for boats and jet skis, as well as boat tours, some featuring themed experiences like a pirate ship.

Other notable lakes include Silverwood Lake and Lake Perris, popular for kayaking, swimming beaches, and hiking trails. Lake Piru is a favored spot for camping, while Puddingstone Lake is known for boating. For closer, smaller options, Echo Park Lake and Lake Balboa provide pedal boats and jogging paths.
