Lakers Training Camp Kicks Off with Surprising Optimism
The Lakers are confident in their improved defense and championship aspirations, spearheaded by Luka Doncic.
The initial week of Los Angeles Lakers training camp has been marked by a pervasive sense of optimism and excitement, with key players expressing strong belief in the team's potential to contend for a championship this season.
Enhanced Perimeter Defense
Contrary to external expectations, the Lakers' perimeter defense has emerged as a surprising strength early in camp. Coach JJ Redick was compelled to cut a practice session short due to the intensity of competition, a reflection of the high effort from the nine new additions to the roster vying for open starting positions alongside Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler.
Kessler, the team's defensive anchor, has been impressed by the team's intensity on the perimeter. "I think we’re going to be a nasty defensive team, I’m just being honest," Kessler stated. "Just seeing these guys hound the ball on the perimeter." He added that players are effectively masking their weaknesses and amplifying their strengths, particularly on the defensive end.
"Everyone’s got their own strengths, weaknesses. But I think that these guys are really good at not allowing their weaknesses to show and really focusing on their strengths, and [making] sure that’s what’s pushing them forward, especially on the defensive side," Kessler commented when asked to identify standout defenders, listing several teammates.
Championship Aspirations
Despite a significant roster overhaul and the departure of LeBron James, the Lakers are unified in their belief that they can compete for a championship. Redick conveyed his confidence, stating, "I’m confident we’re gonna develop as a team into a championship-level team this year." Reaves echoed this sentiment, agreeing that the team has arrived at a competitive level.
"I do," Reaves said when asked if he agreed with the championship aspirations. "Let me tell you, trying to score on Matisse and Ziaire, especially with Adou out there, too, and then Walker on the back line is not easy. I had to deal with that all day yesterday and today, and it’s not fun. So, defensively, we’re going to be much better." This focus on defense is crucial for a team that ranked 19th in defensive rating last season.
Kessler also expressed his conviction that the Larry O’Brien Trophy is attainable for the Lakers this season. "I believe so," he affirmed. "No question. Yeah, undoubtedly."
The Luka Doncic Era
The team's trajectory is firmly centered around Luka Doncic, who is embracing his role as the franchise leader. Having been traded to the Lakers in February 2025, Doncic feels a heightened sense of responsibility following James' departure. He is reportedly fully healthy after missing the previous postseason due to a strained hamstring.
Doncic played an active role in shaping the current roster, specifically requesting Reaves and Kessler as teammates. He further demonstrated his commitment by funding a minicamp for the entire Lakers team in Slovenia, an unprecedented move in his career.
Doncic led the league in scoring last season with 33.5 points per game, ranked third in assists with 8.3 per game, and finished fourth in MVP voting. The team anticipates an MVP-caliber performance from him in the upcoming season.
