Lakers Showcase Potential in Preseason Despite New Additions
The Lakers demonstrated promising signs in their preseason games with new players Walker Kessler and Sandro Mamukelashvili showing early flashes of impact.
The Los Angeles Lakers provided reasons for optimism during their preseason campaign, signaling potential despite integrating nine new players. Over five preseason games and numerous practices, the team has begun to address the necessary adjustments for the upcoming season.
"Big 3" Integration and Walker Kessler's Impact
The established core of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, alongside LeBron James, needed time to find success last season. With James's departure and the addition of Walker Kessler, this integration process begins anew. The Lakers aim for a quicker assimilation this time, with each player having defined roles. Kessler is expected to enhance the team's rebounding and rim protection, complementing Doncic and Reaves.
Kessler's preseason debut showed promise, with 11 points, nine rebounds, and one block in a loss to the Warriors. However, he also displayed signs of rust in a subsequent loss to the Nuggets, where he was outscored by Nikola Jokic. Despite this, Kessler is anticipated to be a significant contributor once he regains his rhythm after a lengthy absence due to shoulder surgery.
The Lakers invested heavily in Kessler, acquiring him via a sign-and-trade with the Jazz that cost two first-round picks and two future pick swaps, coupled with a four-year, $130 million contract. Kessler acknowledged the support system, stating, "The support system around me with my teammates, the coaching staff, front office, they’re fantastic." He views the legacy of being a Lakers big man not as pressure, but as an opportunity.
Sandro Mamukelashvili's Offensive Contributions
Sandro Mamukelashvili emerged as a standout performer during the preseason, significantly raising the Lakers' offensive potential. He surpassed expectations, averaging 13.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, while shooting an impressive 55.6% from the field and 54.2% from three-point range.
Head coach JJ Redick praised Mamukelashvili's quick decision-making. Austin Reaves noted that positive outcomes often occur when Mamukelashvili brings the ball up the court. "He’s a good basketball player, so we’re very excited for what he brings to the team," Reaves commented.
Ziaire Williams's Promising Outlook
Ziaire Williams, despite playing in only two preseason games due to a contusion, made a notable impact. He shot 5-for-5 from beyond the arc and averaged 13.5 points, also showing glimpses of defensive capability.
If the 25-year-old can develop into the consistent, athletic, and lockdown perimeter defender the Lakers have sought, he could elevate the team's overall potential. Williams's skillset aligns with the Lakers' needs, and after two seasons with the Nets, he may find a beneficial opportunity with his new team.
