Lakers Set for First Preseason Test Against Kings Amidst New-Look Roster

After a week of training camp, the Los Angeles Lakers are preparing to face their first external opponent in the Sacramento Kings on Monday night. This preseason game marks the initial opportunity to see the new-look Lakers, featuring prominent players like Luka Doncic, in action against another team.

The matchup against the Kings is the first of two exhibition games to begin the Lakers' preseason schedule. They will also play the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night, before concluding their exhibition games with a return to Los Angeles for a game against the Warriors on Oct. 21, ahead of the regular season opener.

While the exact lineup for Monday's game remains uncertain, with coach JJ Redick indicating the team is still determining player availability, these preseason contests serve as crucial opportunities. They provide valuable reps for the team to integrate new pieces and for players to solidify their roles alongside established figures such as Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler.

Player Availability and Rotation Dynamics

The number of preseason games star player Luka Doncic will participate in is still a point of interest. Historically, Doncic has played around two to three preseason games annually. This period is particularly important for him as he returns from an injury that ended his previous season early and has had the longest stretch without competitive basketball since entering the NBA.

Austin Reaves has also been a consistent preseason participant, though the Lakers' schedule had more exhibition games in prior seasons. With a significantly altered roster, the cohesion between stars and role players is a key focus, beginning with these initial games.

Defensive Focus

A notable aspect emphasized during training camp has been the team's wing players intensifying their full-court defensive efforts. The preseason games will reveal how effectively this strategy translates against opposing offenses and which players are best suited to execute it. Players like Adou Thiero, Cameron Carr, Ziaire Williams, Jake LaRavia, Jarred Vanderbilt, Quentin Grimes, and Matisse Thybulle are competing for wing minutes, potentially including starting roles. Their performance on defense will be closely watched.

Frontcourt Considerations

Behind center Walker Kessler, the Lakers have multiple options for their big man rotation. The preseason will offer insight into the role Kevon Looney will play, with indications from camp suggesting a solidified position in the rotation. Increased minutes for Looney could also mean fewer instances of the Lakers employing small-ball lineups with Sandro Mamukelashvili at the center position.
