Lakers' Preseason Swings Highlight Importance of Player Availability

The Los Angeles Lakers' preseason schedule has showcased the volatile nature of exhibition games, with performances swinging from impressive to disappointing within a 24-hour span. This duality highlights the significant impact of player availability on team dynamics and overall results.

On Monday, the Lakers presented a strong showing against a Sacramento Kings team projected to struggle in the upcoming season. However, just one day later, they were soundly defeated by the Golden State Warriors, a team striving to remain competitive with its veteran core.

The varied outcomes serve as a reminder that drawing definitive conclusions from preseason games about a team's full-season prospects is often premature. Factors such as player health and the limited time teams have to integrate new schemes and players contribute to inconsistent performances.

Player availability was a key narrative in the Lakers' recent games. Several key players, including Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Walker Kessler, Ziaire Williams, Matisse Thybulle, and Collin Sexton, were sidelined for the matchup against the Warriors. This absence of crucial personnel directly impacted the team's performance.

Preseason games are not typically when teams are at their peak. With only a handful of training camp practices before facing external competition, and a limited number of full practices before the regular season commences, teams are still finding their rhythm. Therefore, inconsistencies are expected.

Despite the variability, preseason exhibitions offer valuable insights into a team's focus and development since assembling its roster and commencing training camp. For the Lakers, the game against the Kings, particularly when their key players were on the court, provided a glimpse into the team's vision.

Even with Walker Kessler, a significant rim protector, unavailable, the Lakers demonstrated an aggressive defensive identity. When key players like Doncic, Reaves, and Sexton were participating, the team showcased a commitment to full-court defensive pressure, leading to increased deflections, steals, and forced turnovers. This heightened physicality was a focal point, with players like Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle leading the charge.

Doncic commented on the defensive intensity, stating, "Especially with Matisse and Ziaire, [the defense at the beginning] of the game [against the Kings], that’s contagious for everybody. It was inspirational."

The offense is expected to continue centering around Doncic, and soon Reaves, once he is back in the lineup. However, the team's offensive approach may evolve. Doncic is anticipated to operate off the ball more frequently at the start of possessions, utilizing screens to regain possession and leverage his offensive gravity.

Head coach JJ Redick acknowledged the team's progress, saying, "You can look at any game, or any practice, and find good stuff to build on. So, yes, it’s encouraging." The encouraging signs from the preseason, even with the mixed results, indicate a positive trajectory for the Lakers as they prepare for the regular season.
