Lakers Practice Cut Short Due to Player Intensity

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick was compelled to alter practice on Tuesday, the second day of training camp, due to an overwhelming display of effort and physicality from his players. The team's wings, in particular, were praised for establishing a defensive tone, prompting Redick to cut drills short.

"It was wonderful," Redick stated after practice. He emphasized that the mandate for wings was to establish physicality, setting the tone for premier rim protector Walker Kessler. Redick noted that the players were "picking the ball up earlier, being disruptive earlier, eating at the shot clock earlier," with their off-ball physicality being particularly strong.

The heightened intensity comes as two starting spots alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are up for grabs. Players understand that defensive prowess will be a key factor in securing playing time. Quentin Grimes commented on the high intensity from the start, stating, "We're trying to set the tone defensively for who we want to be as a team, picking up full court, everybody, all five guys trying to switch one through five." This intensity, however, also led to some offensive sloppiness, which contributed to Redick's decision to end practice early.

Despite external skepticism about the Lakers' defensive capabilities following offseason changes, players like Walker Kessler expressed confidence. "We're going to be a nasty defensive team, I'm just being honest," Kessler said. "We have a lot of defensive tools."

These tools include Matisse Thybulle's anticipation, Ziaire Williams' size and athleticism, Grimes' point-of-attack skills, and Adou Thiero's strength and athleticism. Austin Reaves noted the difficulty of scoring against this lineup during practice, highlighting the defensive improvements. "So, defensively, we're going to be much better. Those guys compete every possession, and then everybody else, fills in their roles and plays the right way. So, yeah, I see how special we can be."
