Lakers Newcomers Reflect on the Significance of Joining Franchise

For Ziaire Williams, signing with the Los Angeles Lakers carried a profound significance, representing a homecoming and a full-circle moment. Williams, a forward who joined the Lakers on a veteran's minimum contract after stints with the Grizzlies and Nets, was born in Lancaster, California, approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles.

Williams grew up watching the Lakers, influenced by the championship eras of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. He played high school basketball locally before transferring to Sierra Canyon, where he was a teammate of Bronny James. "It's a blessing, man," Williams said. "I remember being six years old in a YMCA Junior Lakers jersey in Lancaster. Just growing up and seeing the LA culture, watching the championship parades on the street. It’s purple and gold everywhere, man. My family bleeds purple and gold, so just to be able to throw the jersey on and be able to play on the biggest stage of the world is a blessing for sure."

Williams is not the only new addition to the Lakers who has a deep connection to the franchise. Guard Collin Sexton, signed to a two-year deal, also expressed his lifelong admiration for the team, particularly Kobe Bryant. "You can tell they love their team," Sexton said. "I’m super excited to be here and just thankful to be a part of the organization. I can remember my first basketball recreation team, I was playing for the Lakers jersey, number 10, so that’s why I also chose number 10."

These sentiments are shared by other offseason acquisitions as they begin to grasp the Lakers' global brand and the expectations that come with it. Walker Kessler, a significant addition for the Lakers, experienced the team's international reach during a recent mini-camp in Slovenia. "The amount of Lakers fans, and obviously Luka fans, but just Lakers jerseys and kids and adults, just everyone just being so excited to see the Lakers, I mean, it’s one of the biggest brands in all of sports internationally," Kessler noted. He also felt the historical weight upon seeing the franchise's 17 championship banners at the team's practice facility, describing it as an "opportunity to play for a historic franchise."

Quentin Grimes, a guard with previous experience in large markets like Philadelphia and New York, acknowledged the unique pressure of playing in Los Angeles. "L.A. is a different beast," Grimes stated. "It’s one of the, if not the most coveted sports team basketball-wise in the country for sure, one of the most prestigious ones as well. Everybody knows the Lakers. You go anywhere around the world and everybody knows that Lakers logo." He emphasized the importance of focusing on the team and the game, rather than external noise.

Matisse Thybulle, another wing joining the Lakers, is eager to experience playing for such a high-profile team. "Just as an NBA player, it’s just widely accepted that it’s a big deal to play for the Lakers," Thybulle said. "And for me, not having yet done that, just being able to put the jersey on and take some photos, I don’t think it’s fully settled in. But I look forward to the first game and just to get this season going and see what that support really feels like from a local and global standpoint."

Sexton, Williams, Kessler, Grimes, and Thybulle are among the nine new players who have joined the Lakers this offseason, aiming to complement stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves and add to the franchise's legacy.
