Lakers Forward Ziaire Williams Returns to Full Practice, Easing Injury Concerns
Williams participated fully in practice, a positive sign ahead of the Lakers' preseason finale.
The Los Angeles Lakers received a positive injury update on forward Ziaire Williams, who fully participated in the team's practice on Thursday. This marks a significant step for Williams as he recovers from swelling in his left foot, an issue that had caused him to miss the team's previous three preseason games.
Williams expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, "No idea actually [what caused the swelling]. But the swelling is back down and I was getting up and down and it felt great." He added that his availability for Friday's preseason finale against the Nuggets is now in the hands of the team's staff, who he feels have been "taking care of me."
Williams, a potential starter competing for a spot alongside Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler, had started in the Lakers' lone preseason game on Oct. 5 against the Sacramento Kings. He is vying for one of the two remaining open starting positions.
"It’s great competition," said teammate Quentin Grimes. "Everybody wants competition, everybody wants to compete for something, fight for something, earn something. Nothing’s given, so I think it just creates a healthy competition within the team."
Luka Doncic also returned to full practice on Thursday after sitting out the team's game against the Warriors. Guard Collin Sexton participated in drills but did not play in the live scrimmage. Coach JJ Redick indicated that Sexton is "trending in the right direction" for the regular season opener on Oct. 21 against the Warriors.
Second-year forward Adou Thiero was a partial participant in practice for maintenance reasons, while rookie wing Cameron Carr was absent.
