Lakers Face Roster Crunch as Preseason Ends

As the NBA preseason draws to a close, the Los Angeles Lakers are facing a roster crunch, with decisions looming on which players will secure the final spots before the regular season begins. The team entered training camp with 16 players on guaranteed contracts, one more than the league-mandated limit of 15 for the regular season.

Rob Pelinka, Lakers' president of basketball operations and general manager, acknowledged the situation in late September, stating that the competition for the final roster spot would play out over the month leading up to Opening Night. He also noted the possibility of consolidation trades, where multiple players could be traded for one, as another avenue to address the numbers.

"Going from 16 guys to 15 guys, we have until Opening Night for the competition to sort of play out and see who the best 15 players are," Pelinka said. "Behind that evaluation of who’s emerging in camp, there’s also consolidation trades that can still be looked at, trading two guys out, bringing one in. So there’s a number of ways that that could be addressed, and the back-end point of it will be before we play the Warriors. So, the next month will kinda answer those questions."

League personnel anticipate that either Dalton Knecht or Jaden Hardy will be the player waived or traded to comply with the roster limit. Both players have reportedly been involved in trade discussions, but neither had been moved as the Lakers prepared for their final preseason game against the Denver Nuggets.

If the Lakers opt to waive a player rather than find a trade partner, the expectation is that Knecht would be the one to be let go. However, no final decision has been made, leaving open the possibility of alternative resolutions.

The Lakers, like all NBA teams, must finalize their Opening Night roster by 2 p.m. PT on Monday. The regular season commences on Tuesday, with the Lakers scheduled to host the Golden State Warriors for their first regular-season game on Wednesday.

Jaden Hardy, acquired by the Lakers from the Washington Wizards in July as part of the trade that sent Deandre Ayton to Washington, expressed a calm outlook regarding the impending roster decisions. "For me, I just came here [with] a clear head, clear-minded, new situation," Hardy said. "New opportunity. It’s a blessing to be here."

When asked about potential anxiety concerning the roster crunch, Hardy responded, "Nah, I mean, it’s in God’s hands. I’m blessed to be here."
