Lakers Face Familiar Challenge Against Warriors Amidst Preseason Lessons

The Los Angeles Lakers are opening their regular season against the Golden State Warriors under circumstances eerily similar to the previous year, following two preseason contests. However, the nature of exhibition games limited the insights the Lakers could draw from game film in preparation for their season opener at Crypto.com Arena.

In their first exhibition game on Oct. 6, the Lakers faced the Warriors without key players such as Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler. A week later, Kessler made his preseason debut, and Reaves scored a personal best of 28 points in their second matchup. Yet, the Warriors were also without significant players like Draymond Green, Al Horford, and Kristaps Porzingis, and Stephen Curry played limited minutes. Kessler and Reaves also saw restricted playing time, rendering the game tape from these encounters less indicative of what to expect.

"We'll do a normal scout," coach JJ Redick stated regarding the regular season opener. "There’s segments of the game where they’re playing their rotation guys, [we’re] playing our rotation guys, where you can look and glean some stuff from that. And we will. Obviously you look at how they have played historically and what they’ve been good at. So there’ll be a combination of the two."

Despite the Warriors being considered a fading dynasty, their strategic play continues to challenge opposing defenses. Draymond Green's defensive leadership and Stephen Curry's unparalleled shooting historically force defenses into difficult positions. However, they are no longer the dominant force they once were.

A significant lesson for the Lakers from their preseason games against the Warriors was the Warriors' ability to force turnovers. In the second exhibition game, the Lakers committed an alarming 30 turnovers. This pattern is consistent with the Warriors' performance over the past two seasons, where they have consistently ranked among the top five in defensive turnover percentage. Addressing this issue is paramount for the Lakers to secure a victory in their season opener.

Furthermore, the preseason matchups revealed that the Lakers have the potential to be a stronger defensive team than initially anticipated. Redick noted that the team's defensive standards have risen since early training camp. "From early in September, and even kind of early training camp-ish, maybe before we played our first game, I thought we could potentially be like around an average defense," Redick said. "Our standards for that have elevated, and we talked to the group about that. We have the chance to be a good defense. And there’s certain things that we really want to get better at from the preseason. The areas of focus for us, transition defense, defensive rebounding, we weren’t good. So if we get better at that, we’ll have a chance to be a pretty good defense, and that’s exciting."
