Lakers' Doncic and Warriors' Lendeborg Set for Another Showdown
A rookie's public criticism of the NBA's leading scorer has amplified anticipation for their next matchup.
The stage is set for a potential fireworks display when the Los Angeles Lakers host the Golden State Warriors on Friday, with rookie Yaxel Lendeborg's vocal criticism of Luka Doncic adding an extra layer of intensity to the matchup.
Lendeborg, a first-year player for the Warriors, publicly stated he "lost all respect" for Doncic, the Lakers' star offensive player, following their season opener on Oct. 21. This bold declaration has fueled anticipation for their upcoming game, as Doncic is known to thrive on competitive energy and trash talk.
Doncic is currently leading the league in scoring, averaging 36 points per game. He is expected to be well-rested for Friday's contest after sitting out the Lakers' recent win over the Clippers due to back tightness. His teammate Austin Reaves has noted Doncic's responsiveness to crowd interaction, even suggesting paying spectators to heckle him.
Lendeborg's comments, made over a week ago, have had time to resonate with Doncic. The 24-year-old Warriors forward criticized Doncic for "whining and complaining," directly addressing a common media critique of the star player. "He's not Michael Jordan," Lendeborg stated on Oct. 23, doubling down on his remarks despite acknowledging he may have "taken it overboard in the media."
This exchange has added intrigue to what is already a compelling individual matchup. In their previous meeting, Lendeborg was assigned to guard Doncic and held him to 1-of-6 shooting on primary defense, according to ESPN tracking statistics. However, the Warriors ultimately fell to the Lakers by 22 points.
During that game, Lendeborg received a technical foul for chirping at Doncic. The Lakers star responded by making a 49-foot shot with 1.4 seconds left in the first half and then trash-talking Lendeborg. Doncic finished that game with 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists in just 30 minutes, boasting a +31 plus-minus rating, significantly outscoring Lendeborg's 12 points.
Lendeborg's actions have not gone unnoticed by his own team. Warriors guard Steph Curry commented that Lendeborg "set the table for himself to have to show up," while coach Steve Kerr expressed approval of the rookie's bravado but stressed the importance of backing it up. "The way you back it up is to not getting lured into that [next time] when we play them again," Kerr added.
Doncic leads the Lakers with a 4-1 record, while Lendeborg has been a key contributor for the Warriors (2-3), averaging 22.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, four assists, and one steal per game, positioning himself as a contender for Rookie of the Year.
