Lakers Bet Future on Walker Kessler, Seeking Defensive Anchor

The Los Angeles Lakers have made a substantial investment in center Walker Kessler, acquiring him from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade deal. The move, which secured Kessler with a four-year, $130 million contract, involved the Lakers relinquishing two unprotected first-round picks and two future first-round pick swaps. This trade effectively leaves the Lakers without a tradable first-round draft pick for the next seven years.

This significant expenditure and sacrifice of future assets were reportedly driven by star player Luka Dončić's explicit desire for a dominant center. The Lakers organization responded by meeting this demand, viewing the acquisition as a necessary gamble to bolster their roster.

Kessler, a 7-foot-2, 245-pound center, is recognized as one of the NBA's premier rim protectors and rebounders. His defensive capabilities were a key factor in the Lakers' decision. In the 2024-2025 season, he contested 7.5 shots per game at the rim, ranking him among the league's top defenders in that category.

Last season, Kessler's development was hampered by a torn labrum in his left shoulder, requiring season-ending surgery and limiting his play to just five games. This injury means there is a limited recent sample size to assess his current form.

Drafted 22nd overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2022 and later traded to the Jazz, Kessler's career averages stand at 9.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game, with an impressive 68.1% field goal shooting percentage.

The high cost of acquiring Kessler suggests that the Lakers expect more than just solid defensive play; they are looking for a star presence in the paint. For Kessler to justify the investment, he is expected to become an All-Defensive player and a borderline All-Star, becoming a pivotal piece of the Lakers' core alongside Dončić and Austin Reaves. His role will include anchoring the defense, setting effective screens, and contributing significantly on both ends of the court.

Kessler has expressed his commitment to the Lakers, stating that the organization's belief in him, demonstrated through the substantial investment, motivates him to perform at his highest level. "If I know that they have that belief in me, I’m gonna run through a brick wall for them," Kessler said during his introductory press conference. "That’s just how I’ve been wired my whole life."

If Kessler can fulfill these expectations, the Lakers may emerge as a competitive force in the Western Conference. However, failure to meet these demands could lead to several challenging seasons for the franchise. Despite the risks, the Lakers' front office appears confident that the move was the correct one to pursue immediate contention.
