Lady A's Charles Kelley Reveals Multiple Myeloma Diagnosis

Country music star Charles Kelley, a member of the band Lady A, announced Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer.

Kelley, 45, shared the news in an Instagram video, accompanied by his wife of 17 years, Cassie McConnell. He described the diagnosis as a "hurdle" but expressed optimism, citing recent medical advancements that have significantly improved life expectancy for the condition.

"I feel really hopeful," Kelley stated in the video. "I really do."

He explained that the diagnosis stemmed from "a couple of random rib fractures" that prompted his doctor to order further tests. Kelley likened his current treatment process to his sobriety journey, which he publicly shared in 2022 after previously entering rehab. He emphasized the importance of sharing his experience to alleviate the burden and reduce the cancer's power over him.

Kelley plans to continue working for at least the next six months. During this period, Lady A is scheduled to release a new album and perform Christmas concerts. He anticipates that the initial treatment will not be overly invasive and that he will be able to maintain his physical well-being, despite expecting some difficult days.

"I need to be happy and doing what I love to do and spending and soaking up as much time with my family as I can as well," Kelley said.

Multiple myeloma affects plasma cells, which are part of the immune system. In malignant cases, these cells produce abnormal proteins that can damage organs.

Kelley formed Lady A, originally known as Lady Antebellum, in Nashville in 2006 with bandmates Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood. The trio is known for hits such as "Need You Now," "American Honey," and "Just a Kiss."

He and McConnell married in 2009 and have two sons: Ward, 10, and Archer, who recently turned one. Kelley mentioned that a friend is currently undergoing treatment for the same condition and has provided valuable insight into the journey.

"And it’s rare, but I’m young. I feel healthy and the treatments, I will say, have just come so far even in the past five years that even the life expectancy just far exceeds what it used to be," Kelley said. "And I don’t know, I feel really hopeful."

He concluded the announcement by assuring fans of his confidence in overcoming the illness. "But we’re going to get through it. I think, in sobriety, it’s all about one day at a time, and that we’re not in control, and so that’s the way we’re looking at it."
