Brisbane Lions midfielder Lachie Neale is facing a significant contract decision for the 2027 season, with family obligations, the pursuit of a third premiership, and future career prospects all playing a role in his deliberations. The 33-year-old veteran has reportedly attracted interest from up to six clubs.
Neale's personal circumstances have become a central element in his decision-making process. Following his separation from his wife, Jules, in late 2025, their children relocated to Perth, and Neale has acknowledged the challenge of balancing his AFL career with spending time with them. He is also considering proximity to his parents and step-parents, who reside in different locations across South Australia and Victoria.
"I've just got to weigh everything … success, finance, everything that goes along with playing footy. I'm 33 – probably don't have that long left, so yeah, just weighing it all up," Neale told Fox Footy. He admitted to being uncertain about his next move, stating, "I honestly don't know what I'm going to do. It's 100% the truth – I'm not sure what I'll decide."
Six AFL clubs are reportedly interested in Neale, with Collingwood considered a frontrunner. Other clubs linked to the midfielder include St Kilda, Essendon, Adelaide, and West Coast. The Brisbane Lions are also keen to retain their star player as they aim to defend their premiership.
Beyond his playing career, Neale is also in discussions regarding opportunities after football. He has scheduled meetings with other clubs to explore these post-career prospects, alongside ongoing conversations with the Brisbane Lions.
"If I'm honest, I have to go to a couple of meetings [with other clubs] and delve into it a little bit, but it's more talking about the future and more so post-footy as well," Neale said. "I have those chats with Brisbane too and have caught up with Dom [Ambrogio] and Danny [Daly] a couple of times as well – it's not just other clubs."
Despite the growing speculation, Neale indicated he will not rush his decision. He plans to take time to weigh all the factors during the upcoming break in the AFL season. "I love this footy club, I love playing for the Lions. Obviously there is a bit of chatter about where I might end up and there's a couple of options there and things I have to work through," he stated. "At the moment I just love playing with this group and who knows, could still be here next year."
Neale also addressed rumors linking him to St Kilda, humorously remarking that he would not be particular about dining locations as long as coach Ross Lyon was paying.
