The Labour Party's governing body has established a timeline for electing a new leader, with the possibility of a successor to Sir Keir Starmer being installed as early as July 17. This accelerated schedule means Andy Burnham could potentially assume leadership in less than a month, contingent on him being the only Member of Parliament to enter the race.

Potential candidates face strict deadlines to progress in the contest. They must gather the support of 81 MPs by July 15. Following this, they have until July 16 to secure the required number of nominations from affiliated bodies, such as trade unions, to remain eligible.

Should more than one individual successfully garner sufficient support to advance, a ballot will be conducted among Labour party members and affiliated supporters. This ballot is scheduled to take place between August 6 and August 27. The official announcement of the final result is slated for August 29.
