Labour Peer Endorses Conservative 'Iron Dome' Plan for UK Air Defense
Former Defence Secretary Lord John Hutton calls for air defense to be Britain's top priority, criticizing the current government's focus.
A former Labour defence secretary has expressed support for the Conservative Party's proposal for a comprehensive missile defense system, dubbed 'Britannia Shield,' stating that air defense should be Britain's foremost national priority.
Lord John Hutton criticized the current Labour government, led by Andy Burnham, for not adequately addressing the UK's vulnerability to missile and drone attacks amid rising global tensions. He suggested that the government has failed to 'step up to the plate' on defense spending.
The Conservatives have detailed their plan, which includes extending protection to the Falkland Islands. Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge described the proposal as a 'fully integrated missile defence system capable of protecting our nation from drone attack.' The party highlighted the threat by displaying a Shahed 136 drone at their conference.
Lord Hutton told Times Radio that he saw no issue with the Conservative plan and believed such an initiative should have cross-party support. "I think it should. I mean, we've got significant gaps in our air defence capabilities. We should see this as a national number one priority," he said, adding, "I don't have a problem with what the Conservatives are planning. We should welcome the fact someone is talking about this."
He also commented on the Labour government's defense spending record. While defense spending has increased since the last election, Lord Hutton noted the government's lack of a clear plan to meet future spending targets, such as 3% of GDP by 2030 and the NATO benchmark of 3.5% by 2035.
"I am not seeing the focus that I would like the Government to be giving it," Hutton stated. "I have no problem with [the PM] establishing a national care service. But should we do that at the expense of finding the resources to defend the country? Absolutely not."
According to Cartlidge, the Britannia Shield plan would involve deploying the Rapid Sentry air defense system to the Falkland Islands, aiming to deter potential aerial threats from Argentina. The system is also designed to counter drone attacks. The Conservatives have also committed to a significant increase in the Army's Sky Sabre air defense system to bolster defense in the South Atlantic and within Britain.
"We will take whatever steps are necessary to stop anyone from thinking about an invasion. Because the Falklands are British and will always be British," Cartlidge declared.
