Labour MP Karl Turner's Suspension Lifted After Apology for Conduct

Labour MP Karl Turner has had his suspension lifted after issuing an apology for "unacceptable" conduct while opposing government proposals to scrap jury trials. The Hull East MP was stripped of the Labour whip earlier this year amid a campaign against policies of the Keir Starmer administration. This included former prime minister's plans to curb jury trials, which have since been abandoned by Andy Burnham after he replaced Sir Keir in Downing Street.

At the time of his suspension in March, Mr. Turner's Labour whip was removed due to "uncollegiate" behavior, rather than his criticism of Sir Keir's policies. He has now issued an "agreed statement" in which he apologized for his past actions and noted a "renewed approach" to party management under Mr. Burnham. Labour officials confirmed on Wednesday that the restoration of the party whip to Mr. Turner is on a "probationary basis" following his "constructive engagement."

In his statement posted on X, Mr. Turner said, "I want to take this opportunity to apologize and reflect on the offense I may have caused colleagues in recent months. In particular, I recognize that my conduct during disagreements over the Government's proposals to curtail jury trials was, at times, unacceptable. My concerns were sincerely held and reflected my longstanding commitment to justice and the rule of law. However, I acknowledge that, in advancing those arguments, my approach was sometimes overly robust and that my words or actions caused offense to colleagues."

He added, "With the Party under new leadership and a renewed approach to managing differences of opinion, I am keen to move forward positively and draw a line under this episode. I am grateful to have had the whip restored and to the Government Chief Whip (Anneliese Midgley) for her constructive approach. I have given her assurances as to my future conduct."

A Labour Party spokesperson stated, "Following discussions with the Government Chief Whip, Karl Turner MP has had the Labour whip restored on a probationary basis. The Chief Whip welcomes Karl Turner's constructive engagement and his acknowledgement that aspects of his behaviour, actions and public comments fell short of the standards expected of Labour MPs. We welcome his public apology and the undertakings he has given regarding his future conduct. We now look forward to moving ahead positively, with Karl Turner continuing to contribute as a Labour MP."
