Internal disputes have emerged within the Labour Party concerning the upcoming by-election in the Holborn and St Pancras constituency, formerly held by Keir Starmer. The Green Party is positioning itself for a strong challenge, with leader Zack Polanski signaling his intention to stand.

The contest is a significant early test for Labour's current leadership and its recent polling surge. Labour has consistently held the inner London seat since its creation in 1983, though Starmer's majority significantly decreased in the 2024 general election to 11,000, down from 27,763 in 2019. His campaign that year faced scrutiny over his stance on Palestine.

Internal party friction was highlighted by Tulip Siddiq, the MP for a neighboring constituency and an ally of Starmer. Siddiq expressed dissatisfaction with potential candidates from outside the local area seeking to contest the seat. "If I didn't see you campaigning even once during the local elections in Camden, it's probably best you don't message me asking for help to run in Holborn and St Pancras," she stated on social media.

Polanski, marking his first year as Green Party leader, indicated his enthusiasm for the upcoming by-election, framing it as a "referendum on ending rip-off Britain." He suggested that the Green Party has a viable chance of winning the seat, emphasizing the party's plans for change.

The Holborn and St Pancras constituency falls within the Camden local authority. In the May local elections, Labour maintained control of the council but saw its representation decrease, winning 30 out of 55 seats compared to 47 in 2022. The Green Party secured 11 council seats in Camden, with seven of those located within the Holborn and St Pancras constituency. However, the Greens have since lost one of these seats to Labour in a subsequent by-election.

The prospect of a strong Green challenge may be further enhanced by the apparent decision of independent candidate Andrew Feinstein, who secured 18.9% of the vote in 2024, not to stand in this election.

Labour aims to select its candidate by the following Wednesday, with the by-election potentially scheduled for October 1 or 8. Speculation about a potential comeback candidate, such as David Miliband, has reportedly been dismissed.

Keir Starmer announced his departure from the House of Commons recently, a move that followed his previous commitment to serve the full parliamentary term. This departure, despite the pledge to serve out the Parliament, presents a challenge for Labour's current leadership, including Andy Burnham.
