Labour Party chair Bridget Phillipson has asserted that billionaire businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe forfeits his "moral high ground" to criticize the United Kingdom while residing in tax exile. Phillipson's remarks, made on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, were in response to Ratcliffe's assertion that he has lost confidence in the UK due to high taxes and immigration.

Sir Jim, the founder of petrochemical company Ineos and co-owner of Manchester United, has been a tax resident in Monaco since 2020. He told the BBC that he would only consider returning to the UK if conditions there improved. Responding to these statements, Phillipson stated that Ratcliffe's decision to become a tax exile, while within his legal rights, undermines his ability to make pronouncements on the nation's trajectory.

When pressed about concerns regarding job creators and significant taxpayers leaving the UK, Phillipson expressed optimism about the country's prospects. She highlighted that the UK is in a strong position heading into the upcoming Budget, citing decisions made over the past two years. She acknowledged the existence of challenges, including international economic headwinds, but maintained a fundamental belief in the nation's strength and its future potential.

Phillipson declined to speculate on potential tax increases in the Budget, scheduled for October 28, reaffirming the government's commitment to fiscal discipline. The situation echoes that of other high-profile billionaires, such as steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and hedge-fund manager Chris Rokos, who have also relocated their tax residency away from the UK.
