LA's High Costs Eased by Hotel Perks, Traveler Finds

Los Angeles, recognized as one of the world's most expensive cities, can still be an affordable vacation spot if travelers creatively utilize hotel perks, according to a recent analysis. While search demand for LA travel packages has surged significantly, particularly a sixfold increase since early 2024, the city's accommodation and daily costs can be substantial. Average travel expenses are estimated at $345 per person per day for a standard vacation, with luxury stays potentially reaching $441 daily, over half of which is allocated to lodging.

Despite these figures, certain neighborhoods offer more accessible pricing. Hollywood, for instance, is considered more affordable compared to upscale areas like Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Malibu. Travel expert Amanda Archer notes that average nightly rates in Hollywood for mid-range hotels have remained relatively stable over the past decade, typically ranging from $300 to $350 for a standard room.

One visitor detailed how strategic use of amenities at the Kimpton Everly Hotel in Hollywood reduced their perceived costs. The hotel, where rooms start at $279 per night, offered several complimentary benefits. Access to the hotel's heated rooftop pool, which could otherwise cost $45 through platforms like ResortPass, was included. Additionally, guests have free use of the hotel's gym and complimentary bike rentals, which can save on costs associated with services like the Metro Bike Share program.

Small forgotten items, such as hair elastics, were also provided by the hotel, saving the guest an estimated $6.48 compared to purchasing them at a local store. A significant saving came from the hotel's daily social hour, offering complimentary drinks and appetizers. Based on menu prices, the value of two glasses of wine and a premium soda consumed during this hour could have been around $19.

Further savings were realized through complimentary coffee and tea. A morning coffee and two tea packets taken for later consumption would have cost approximately $3.95 and $4.23, respectively, if purchased off-site.

Live music events, such as the 'Everly Unplugged' series held in the hotel lobby, are also free for guests, potentially saving them an estimated $20 cover charge typical at other Hollywood venues. After tallying these perks for a single day, the visitor estimated savings of at least $115.69, representing nearly a third of their accommodation cost. This illustrates how embracing complimentary hotel offerings can mitigate the financial impact of visiting a high-cost urban destination like Los Angeles.
