Wealthy Los Angeles families are increasingly opting for elaborate, professionally designed Halloween displays, with some shelling out as much as $100,000 for the festive transformation of their homes. Mason Clark, operating under the business name Holidays by Maddy, has become the go-to decorator for the city's elite, including tech moguls, finance professionals, and Hollywood figures who value discretion.

Clark, who prefers to remain behind the scenes, charges between $3,000 and over $100,000 per project. His services encompass the full design, assembly, and takedown of seasonal decorations, offering clients a seamless way to achieve show-stopping Halloween aesthetics.

What began as a side hustle after studying film and media has evolved into a full-time career for Clark, 32. He now decorates approximately 90 homes annually for Halloween and Christmas. His work is particularly visible in affluent Los Angeles neighborhoods such as Brentwood, Hancock Park, and Santa Monica, with occasional projects extending to Orange County.

This year, one of Clark's most ambitious projects is a World War II-themed display in Hancock Park, featuring a real Jeep Willy and vintage sonar equipment. He began conceptualizing and creating custom props for this installation as early as February, dedicating summer months to crafting banners and barrels. Another elaborate display in Hancock Park is a Harry Potter-themed scene, complete with period lighting, furniture, and decorative elements.

Clark manages a team of about 15 staff who assist with the installations, which typically begin in mid-September. He oversees every aspect, from client consultations and design to inventory management and on-site direction. His business, founded in 2015, became a full-time venture in 2021, supported by a 10,000-square-foot warehouse stocked with a vast array of seasonal props.

Clients often collaborate with Clark using individualized vision boards and purchase props directly from his warehouse. While store-bought items are sometimes used, Clark emphasizes the creation of custom props and meticulous attention to detail. Many clients return annually, and some also utilize his services for Christmas decorations.

Despite initially finding Christmas decorating daunting, Clark now juggles both holidays, describing the large-scale projects as more akin to "a giant art project" than mere work. Beyond seasonal decor, he also undertakes smaller lighting projects for off-season events.
