La Palma: The Canary Island That Captivates Visitors With Its Authentic Charm

La Palma, one of the Canary Islands, is attracting visitors seeking an authentic experience away from the more developed tourist hubs like Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Irishman Jay Burke, who initially planned a short visit 19 years ago, has made the island his home and offers insights into its unique appeal.

Burke, who spent 16 years working as a holiday representative on the island, notes that La Palma offers a different experience than its counterparts. "People sometimes arrive thinking La Palma will be another version of Tenerife or Gran Canaria, but it isn't geared up for tourism in the same way," he said. "For the vast majority, that ends up being the whole appeal."

La Palma is characterized by its relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal destination during the shoulder seasons. Visitors can expect warm temperatures around 22C (72F) even in November. Burke describes the island as having an "enforced relaxation" with no large nightlife strips, but instead offers stunning scenery, local life, and an authentic Canarian feel.

Many of the island's attractions are free, including an extensive hiking network, natural swimming pools, the Los Tilos rainforest and waterfall, and parts of the national park. The San Antonio volcano visitor center offers a unique experience where visitors can walk around the rim of the volcano for a fee of €8 for adults and €6 for children. "People are often surprised when I tell them places like the rainforest, the waterfall, the national park and the natural swimming pools are free," Burke noted.

A geological curiosity on the island is the "Tunnel of Surprises," a road tunnel through La Palma's volcanic spine where weather conditions can shift dramatically in a short span. "You can go into the tunnel in glorious sunshine and come out the other side feeling like you've arrived in a Scottish winter," Burke explained. "You turn a corner and suddenly you're in a completely different landscape."

Other notable sights include Caldera de Taburiente National Park, Roque de los Muchachos, the volcanic landscapes shaped by the 2021 eruption, and the historic capital of Santa Cruz de la Palma. Burke described the views from Roque de los Muchachos as "jaw-dropping."

For culinary experiences, Burke recommends La Placeta in Santa Cruz for its courtyard dining and excellent food, and Tazacorte for its spectacular seafront restaurants, especially at sunset.

First-time visitors are advised to consider the winding, climbing roads when planning drives, as distance on a map does not always reflect travel time. La Palma is also renowned for its exceptional stargazing opportunities due to the clarity of its night skies, which Burke considers one of the best in the world.

Burke encourages those looking for a vacation to consider La Palma for a "traditional, real Canarian experience," highlighting its beauty, safety, and a distinct throwback-to-the-past atmosphere.
